A comment on my blog inspired me to write more about this subject. Just because you are inspired by someone does that necessarily give you the motivation to take action? I believe you can be inspired by someone but I don’t know that this inspiration gives you the actual motivation to do something with that inspiration. Motivation to change or work toward a goal comes from your own inner drive, inspiration plays a role but inner drive is the key to motivation.
I am inspired every day by people following their dreams and paving their way towards a goal. I am inspired by athletes with their innate athletic ability and endurance. I am inspired by ordinary people just living their lives day after day. I was inspired at bootcamp the other morning while I was holding a plank. I didn’t think I could possibly hold the plank for another second when the drill instructor decided to stand on the back of on of the other female recruits while she was holding the plank. This girl’s inner strength to continue holding the plank while this drill instructor weighing at least 170-180 lbs stood on her back motivated me to continue to hold my own plank for the entire time even though I was ready to drop. Her action in this situation was inspiring and it motivated me to stay strong.
Personally the inspiration I get from watching other people motivates me to do better. I don’t think this necessarily applies to everyone because you have to be ready to take that inspiration and use it as motivation. You can be inspired by people but still sit back and do nothing to work your way to your own goals, whether your goal is changing careers, going back to school, losing weight, quitting smoking or quitting alcohol, if you are not ready to take the next step all the inspiration in the world get you any closer to your goals. You need the inner drive to push yourself forward to the next step. Anything is possible you just need to decide to make change, create a goal and follow that goal through completion.
My current goal is to complete a half-marathon in under 2 hours. I am running the Long Island half-marathon on May 1st and I am going to put forth every effort possible to accomplish this goal. I am motivated to do this and I plan to see this goal through to the end.
I started writing this blog as a way to motivate myself to complete my goals, to hold myself accountable not only to myself but to all my readers. In the process I talked with a person yesterday who reads my blog and she told me that my blog inspired her to start exercising. She now gets on her treadmill at 5:30 in the morning before work. I congratulate her on this accomplishment, I may have inspired her but she motivated herself to get up and get on that treadmill!
What inspires and motivates you to reach your goals and dreams?
