Have you ever heard the saying, “get comfortable with being uncomfortable”, that is how today’s tempo run felt. I was definitely uncomfortable for my 4 “tempo” miles today and I almost had a nervous breakdown when I realized that I would have to run my whole half-marathon at this pace to reach my goal. Then I took a deep breath, realized that this was only week four of a ten week training plan and I calmly finished my run.
- Mile 1: 9:15 (warm up)
- Mile 2: 8:44
- Mile 3: 8:45
- Mile 4: 8:43
- Mile 5: 8:47
- Mile 6: 9:28 (cool down)
My actual scheduled tempo run called for 1 mile warm up followed 4 miles at 9:00 min/mile then I mile cool down. This was a tough run but I am confident I am where I need to be at this point in my training.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I think this is going to be my motto for awhile. Is running ever really comfortable? I don’t think I am ever perfectly comfortable at any pace but it is easier running between 9 and 10 min/miles. Running at 8:45 min/mile is an uncomfortable pace for me but if I want to meet my goal I guess I will have to get comfortable with that pace. My hope is by pushing myself past my comfort level the threshold between uncomfortable and comfortable will increase and allow me to sustain an 8:45 pace for 13.1 miles. I guess only time will tell.
Are you comfortable will being uncomfortable?
