Today was the perfect day to run 9 miles, sunny and 46 degrees at 8:30 am, but I just did not want to do it. I had some Irish soda bread with peanut butter and raspberry preserves about 1 hour prior to my run and then I played a few mental games with myself to push myself out the door.
- Mile 1: 9:13
- Mile 2: 8:38
- Mile 3: 8:45
- Mile 4: 9:03
- Mile 5: 9:08
- Mile 6: 9:43 (running into the wind)
- Mile 7: 9:46 (running into the wind)
- Mile 8: 9:29 (negative split)
- Mile 9: 9:19 (negative split)
I had an average pace of 9:13/mile and I need to run 9:05/mile or under to complete the half-marathon in under 2 hours. I am getting closer to my goal pace but this is how I felt after the run:
During the run at about mile 6 I refueled with vanilla flavored GU:
I really liked this flavor it went down smoothly and didn’t bother my stomach at all. I really like using the GU to refuel during my long runs because it goes down so easily compared to eating “real” food like raisins, I always seem to choke on those when I try eating them while running.
I also wore my new Zoot compression socks:
There are many studies of the benefits of compression sock while running but what appealed to me most was the fact that these socks would help reduce muscle fatigue and post-exercise soreness. Compression socks work by increasing circulation back to the heart where blood can be re-oxygenated, improving circulation and blood flow allowing runners to run longer. They also provide extra support to the calf and shins reducing the likelihood of shin splints.
Do these socks really work? I think I’ll have to wear them at least a few more times to answer that question. I wore them today and I definitely felt the support, especially in my calf and shin area which is where I desperately need it. I also ran today’s 9 mile run almost 5 minutes faster than last week’s but it’s too soon to say that the compression stockings were the cause plus I was sick last Thursday which had some impact on that run.
Do you wear compression socks while running and what benefits do you feel that they provide?
Tomorrow is a rest day or yoga depending on how I feel after work. I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!
