Yoga and stretching are an important part of every fitness program, fitting it in will provide you with many benefits and help to keep you injury free. I can absolutely feel the difference in my body when I slack on my yoga practice, my muscles are tight and more achy leaving me at an increased risk for developing injuries. Today was the first time I practiced yoga in over a week and it felt great! I plan to make it a priority to practice yoga at least twice a week and on the other days to stretch for at least 10 minutes.
Here are some of the benefits of yoga/stretching:
- Improved posture: I have the most terrible posture and yoga has helped improve my posture. Yoga also has made me more aware of my body so I am less likely to slouch. Good posture helps you breathe easier, reduces neck and back pain and makes you look slimmer and more confident.
- Improvement in balance, flexibility, range of motion and strength: I have seen improvement in all these areas when I regularly practice yoga and these benefits help to keep me injury free.
- Stress reduction: When I start my day with yoga I am less stressed and much calmer. Yoga helps to keep not only my body feeling balanced but my mind too!
One of my favorite poses is Happy Baby Pose aka Dead Bug Pose:
This pose not only releases the lower back and sacrum it helps to open the hips, inner thighs and groins. It also calms the brain and reduces stress and fatigue. It is amazing how one pose can have so many benefits. For more info on this pose or any other pose check out Yoga Journal’s website.
