My left shin has been aching on and off for the last 2 weeks since my 13 mile training run. I ran 7 miles on Monday without any pain just to have the ache return yesterday. Today I woke up 90% better but I still have the ache so I have decided not to run again until the race unless I feel miraculously better by Friday and then maybe I’ll run a 5K.
This is a difficult decision for me because I have trained so hard these last 10 weeks to run the Long Island Half Marathon in under 2 hours. At this point I have to believe that all my training has made it possible for me to meet this goal even though I have had to rest a lot these last two weeks. The only other option would be to try and run but then I risk injuring myself further and not being able to run the race at all. So resting is the lesser of two evils .
So today I cross trained and biked 15 miles on my recumbent bike.
Not as easy as I thought it would be but it’s definitely not as challenging as running but I guess it’s better than nothing, although my leg did ache a little after I finished so I think I’m pretty much laying off of any form of exercise until Sunday’s race. The rest of my week will consist of rest, ice, compression, elevation, stretching and foam rolling.
Mentally this is challenging because I am so close to my goal I can taste it and just knowing this shin can keep me from meeting it is depressing, but even if I don’t there is always the Rock’n’Roll 1/2 in Virginia Beach. So to stay cheerful I keep looking at these pics:
How can you not smile when looking at that face !! I am hoping my winning streak continues today with an entry into the NYC Marathon, the lottery starts at 12…..wish me luck!!!
How do you deal with injuries prior to a big race?
