The Long Run is a story of not only of the determination of one man’s courageous fight to once again become an athlete it is a story of what the human body is capable of when pushed to the limits. Matt Long was a NYC firefighter literally struck down by a tragic accident when a bus collided with his bike during an illegal NYC transit strike. Matt fought his way back from near death to once again tackle what he was told would be an impossible feat…the ability to run again.
This book takes us on a journey from the years of painful rehab Matt endured to be able to live a “normal” life again to his triumphant moment of crossing the NYC marathon just 3 years after the horrific accident that changed his life forever. In this book Matt opens up and lets us in on all his deepest and at times darkest thoughts that he struggled with after one small moment changed his life forever. Matt shows us through faith and determination that anything is possible when you set your mind to it.
This book is an inspiration to all, Matt not only completed the NYC marathon but he went on to become an Ironman once again. Matt continues to tell his story publicly to groups of people and privately to patients struggling with recovery. Matt continues to deal with physical and mental struggles stemming from the accident but he gets up everyday and faces his own personal marathon by helping other people with the same struggles he had to and will have to face.
Matt launched a foundation called I Will, a program to help people recover from life-altering illness’s or traumatic injuries so they can live their life to the fullest. The I Will foundation provides support through hands on training, emotional support and financial support when necessary. Check out the I Will site and how you can help here.
I recommend this book to everyone, it doesn’t matter if you are an athlete or not, this book will inspire you.
