When my friend AnnMarie called me last week inviting me to join her for a CrossFit class, I jumped at the chance. I have been wanting to try CrossFit for awhile but never really looked into a place that offered it near where I live, so when she said she has been going to a class 10 minutes from where we are I was thrilled. At 9:00 am this morning AnnMarie picked me up and took me to my first, most definitely not my last, CrossFit class.
I have tried many different exercise classes from bootcamp (indoors and outdoors) to body pump to kickboxing to yoga and many more that could take me this entire blog to list, but I have heard CrossFit is the most intense workout around. I love challenging classes so knowing this fact about CrossFit didn’t make me the least bit nervous, my biggest fear associated with trying any new workout is that I won’t be able to keep up and I’ll look like an idiot, neither of which happened today.
Upon arrival at CrossFit Revenge I met the co-owners and trainers Adam and Mike, they were extremely welcoming, which made me feel comfortable right away. It can be very intimidating walking into this type of class, but the atmosphere was one of camaraderie rather than intimidation. After signing up for my 1-week trial I was ready to workout!!!
The class began with a warmup-400 meter run, stretches, push-ups, squats, sit-ups and pull-ups (assisted by a band). I had no problem keeping up with the warm-up, I was able to do 10 pull-ups with the assist of a band and 10 full push-ups followed by 5 on my knees….yay!! I guess I am a little stronger than I think. After the warm-up we walked across the street to a field, outdoor workout + hot, humid weather = torture. We did a 100 meter bear crawl turned around and did 5 long jumps followed by 3 burpees repeating this sequence until we were back where started and then we did it again x 5 more times. I was sweating after the first 2 minutes and did not stop until 30 minutes after the class ended, if I had been wearing a heart rate monitor it would have probably read 300.
I completed this sequence in about 23 minutes (I can’t remember the exact time), not too bad for a first timer, I kept up. I even developed a war wound:
This class was killer!!! I absolutely loved it!! I am going to take advantage of my free week and attend a 6 am class on Friday and then again on Monday. I have a feeling I am going to be hooked after that and will be signing my life away to attend more classes.
Mike also discussed diet with us because working out is not enough, if you want a killer body you have to eat a healthy diet. He assessed our nutritional needs, reviewed the CrossFit diet (based on The Zone) and gave us some informational handouts to read. Mike also gave us a log so we can record what we are eating and then he will review it and give us tips on how we are doing. I’d say AnnMarie and I got the works today, CrossFit revenge encompasses all your workout needs including nutrition, they don’t just work you out and let you fend for yourself, they want you to see progress so you keep coming back for more.
