Hydration is important in order for your body to function properly and for it to function at optimal levels during activities like exercise. We can live without food for weeks but within a few days of no water or hydration your entire body begins to shut down. I know when I am adequately hydrated I function better both physically and mentally. When I don’t drink enough water or fluid I get cranky and usually develop a terrible headache.
My drink of choice is water with unsweetened seltzer a close second so when I had the opportunity to try out the new Crystal Light Pure courtesy of Kraft Foods I jumped at the chance. I was sent 3 flavors for review: Lemonade, Tropical Blend and Strawberry Kiwi.
I am happy to say that Crystal Light Pure has no artificial sweeteners, flavors or preservatives and is sweetened with sugar and Truvia (a natural sweetener derived from the leaves of a stevia plant). I am not a big fan of artificially sweetened drink products, I have a very sensitive palate and artificial flavorings just don’t agree with me, they give me a headache and leave a nasty aftertaste. Kudos to Crystal Light for making a product sweetened with all natural flavors!
Crystal Light Pure comes in easy on-the-go-packets that can easily be mixed in a 16.9 oz bottle of water or in a tall glass with 16 oz of water added to it. At only 15 calories a serving these packets are a caloric bargain, mind you that there a 2 servings in each packet so you are getting a total of 30 calories when you use the whole packet, which you will be doing most of the time. Labeling of packets like this is a big pet peeve of mine, just label the packet 30 calories…..most people don’t drink half their drink, they will be mixing the whole packet into water and drinking the whole thing.
Of the 3 flavors I received to try the Tropical Blend was by far my favorite, followed by the Lemonade and kicking up the rear was the Strawberry Kiwi. I found the Tropical Blend had a more subtle flavor which appealed to me as opposed to the Strawberry Kiwi which I just found too sweet for my liking. The Lemonade was good with the tart lemony flavor balancing out the sweetness perfectly.
If you like to add some flavor to your water but don’t want a bunch of artificial junk then Crystal Light Pure is a product you should try. Although plain water will always be my number one source of hydration, I will be packing these little packets in my purse so I can add them to my water when I am on the go and need a little extra flavor to help me meet my hydration goals for the day. I aim to drink 8-10 glasses of fluid a day and sometimes water gets a little boring so the Tropical Blend flavor will come in handy.

Hydration Tips from Crystal Light Pure Spokesperson Molly Kimball, RD
1. Keep a Tally
We can’t actually tell how well we’re hydrated by how thirsty we feel. For many of us, by the time we start to feel thirsty, we’re already dehydrated, but just how much water is enough when it comes to staying hydrated? Keep a running tally of how much fluid you’re getting and aim for half of your body weight in ounces of fluid per day, plus an extra 16 ounces for every pound of sweat lost during exercise or work in the heat.
2. Flavor Up to Drink Up
Want to drink water to stay hydrated, but hate the boring taste? Add the flavor you want and none of what you don’t by sipping on naturally sweetened Crystal Light Pure. It’s got no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or preservatives and is sweetened with sugar and Truvia, a natural sweetener derived from the stevia plant. It’ll give your water light, refreshing flavor with just 15 calories and 4 grams of sugar per serving. And the Grape and Strawberry Kiwi flavors have the added bonus of electrolytes!
3. Don’t Forget about Food
Staying well-hydrated is essential for maintaining optimal energy levels, preventing muscle cramping and headaches, and more serious issues like heatstroke. But that doesn’t mean you have to force down gallons of water or bottles of sugary sports drinks. Any type of alcohol-free beverage can count toward your fluid intake – and even some foods! Some of the top electrolyte-rich, hydrating foods include all types of fresh fruit, soups like gazpacho and Greek yogurt.
4. Watch the Caffeine
For years, the widely-held belief was that caffeinated beverages were dehydrating. An abundance of research has proven otherwise, however. The amount of caffeine typically found in standard servings of tea, coffee, and soft drinks appears to have no diuretic effect, meaning that these beverages don’t cause us to lose more fluid than they provide. But remember that you don’t want the majority of your fluids to come from caffeinated drinks since most health organizations recommend we limit our caffeine intake. Instead, try to vary what you’re drinking.
What are some of your tips that you use to stay hydrated?
