Ready, Set, Go!!!!  Share 11 things about you!!!!

As many of you might know already from my Facebook page I am out of commission for at least 2 weeks thanks to my left shin.  I ran 11 miles this week, without pain, but on Friday morning I woke up with pain….I am not a happy camper.   This sucks!

January was to be the beginning of my training for the NYC 1/2, for me to reach my goal of 1:45…..reality has set in that is just not going to happen.  1 week into training I am injured, 3 weeks in I am out of commission.  I hate my shins…..and my flat feet…..and my severe overpronation…all of which have contributed to this pain I am feeling now.

I am determined to beat these shin splints!!!  I have decided that the NYC 1/2 will be just another race…no time goal…I have tried for 3 years to get into this race so even if I have to walk some of it I plan to finish.   The rest of the year is now up in the air, the only real goal I have is that in November I WILL run a marathon!!!  This is the year of the marathon…even if it ends up taking me 5 hours…I will run a marathon.

Here is my game plan:

  • Pretend I am a beginner that has never run before:  I am going to restart my running in 2 weeks like I  have never run before…slow and steady wins the race…right??!!
  • R.I.C.E.:  Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate. I plan to do all of the above when necessary!
  • Stretching:  I plan to stretch…a lot!!!!  I feel many of my injuries occur due to lack of stretching.  I know there are differing opinions on stretching vs. not stretching, but for me, stretching is the way to go.
  • Foam Rolling:  Foam rolling helps to achieve a deep tissue massage that helps to alleviate muscle tightness.  I have seen improvement since foam rolling so I plan to add this into my daily routine.
  • Cross training:  Low impact cross-training.  I am currently a patron of Planet Fitness but I am looking for a gym that has classes like spinning for the same $10 a month or for my super wonderful husband Chris to buy me a spinning bike…(hint, hint.)
  • Lose 10 pounds:  I have gained 10 punds since starting full-time as a home care nurse in August which I planned to take off in January…but that just didn’t happen because I was depressed about not vein able to run.  I plan to actually lose this 10 lbs in February by writing down everything I am eating and logging all my calories.
Once I am healed I will meet my goal of running a 1:45 half-marathon this year….probably mid to late summer, but I will meet this goal.  I will also run a marathon in November..hopefully in 4 hours but I will be happy to just finish!  I will defeat these shin splints no matter what because as much as everyone thinks I should just give up running I can’t! I love to run and will always love to run, so giving in to shin splints is not an option.   I will not be held hostage by my shins!!!!
I will overcome this obstacle and plan to cross-train my butt off…literally until I can run again!!!!  If my shin heals when I plan it to heal, I will have 4 weeks to the NYC 1/2 Marathon…so here is to completing that race….pain free!!!!
Any suggestions on how to overcome shin splints is welcome!

Friday was a big milestone for both me and my blog….1 whole year has passed since I wrote my very first post.  I am proud of what my blog has developed into and the fact that I have maintained it for a whole year.  I love blogging, I love the community, I love all the connections I have made over the past year.  I plan to continue to blog for a very long time and I hope you will all continue to follow me on my journey!!

familypic 1st Blogiversary Dinner Recap

My husband took me to my favorite restaurant Villa D’Aqua to celebrate this milestone.  Villa D’Aqua is a small Italian restaurant less than 10 minutes away from our house that we just love!  It is one of those places that you would never find unless you were looking for it, a true diamond in the rough.  The staff treats you like family and the food is amazing, what more can you ask for when going out to dinner?

villa daqua 1st Blogiversary Dinner Recap

The dinner was fabulous!!  They always put out an olive tapenade, an eggplant spread and a tuna spread in addition to butter for the bread.  I am in love with the olive tapenade on their delicious bread…..it is my biggest downfall, I could eat it all plus 4 slices of bread easily…and sometimes I do!   For the appetizer we had mussels in a garlic wine broth and an arugula salad over buffalo mozzarella. (Please excuse the pics, dark restaurant plus a camera phone equals poor quality photos)

villaapps 1st Blogiversary Dinner Recap

For the main course I had lamb shank with mashed potatoes and broccoli and Chris had a mushroom ragout over pappardelle pasta!  Both were delicious!!!  The only thing on my plate that I didn’t love was that potatoes, they were a little dry, otherwise the rest of the dish was perfect.

I don’t usually get dessert but the lamb didn’t fill me up completely and the banana tart looked amazing, so I got the banana tart plus an Irish coffee…yummy!!!

Dessert was a perfect ending to a perfect night!!!  A big thanks to Chris for being so supportive of my blog and taking me out to this wonderful dinner to celebrate it’s 1st blogiversary.  Once again, thank you to all my loyal readers for following me along on my journey.

When I ran my 1st half-marathon in October of 2010 I really didn’t know how to fuel during my long runs and I did the one thing that you shouldn’t do, I tried out some gummy like product for the first time during that the run.  I pretty much almost choked to death and then proceeded to get nauseous, thankfully it passed pretty quick.  Since that run I have evolved into a much wiser runner by actually trying out products during my training runs and not during a race.

I have tried many options for fueling during my long runs including GU, PowerBar Gels, Clif Shot Bloks, PowerBar Gel Blasts, Jelly Belly Sports Beans, and many more.  Time and time again I come back to Gu Energy Gels because the flavors are great, they do not make me nauseous and they help me stay energized during my run.  I can also easily refuel during a race while running and without choking, a big plus in my book!

gucollage GU Review and Giveaway

I mostly use GU Energy Gels to reenergize during any run that is over 5 miles, it helps to provide me with the energy to complete the run.  I have also used GU Energy Gels to fuel my early morning runs when I just don’t have the time to digest “real” food.  Most recently I received some GU Roctane Energy  to try out and I loved the performance boost it gave me.   GU is the only energy gel I use, I love the flavors and the consistency, other energy gels I have tried just don’t cut it.

I have also tried GU Brew Electrolyte Tablets which I use occasionally for a post-workout recovery drink.  The flavors are great, they are low in calories and do not leave an aftertaste.

You can check out all the pure performance energy products GU has to offer on their website.  You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter, so be sure to stop by and check them out!!!

You still have time to enter to win a GU Sampler pack by participating in my virtual run which ends tomorrow night at 11:59 PM.  You can sign up and enter the giveaways via the Rafflecopter form below:

Disclosure: GU sent me a sampler pack and provided the sampler pack for the giveaway.  I was no compensated in any other way.  All opinions expressed in this post are 100% my own.

I just want to start this post by saying I love Bondi Band!!!!  I actually love their sweat wicking headbands so much that I had my own custom Bondi Bands made up with my blog logo on it!!!  When I was planning my virtual run I reached out to Bondi Band to be a sponsor and they sent me 2 hats, one to review and 1 to giveaway to a participant in my virtual run.

bondiband1 Bondi Band Hat Review and Giveaway

I have a love hate relationship with wearing hats while running, I love to be warm but I hate that after a mile or 2 I am so warm I have to take the hat off and figure out where I am going to put it.  Do I hold it?  Do I squeeze it in my pocket?  Do I just drop it on the side of the road???  I really dislike holding things when I run so this is a dilemma for me.

Enter the Bondi Band hat…..light, sweat wicking, comfortable……would this be the hat that would keep me warm and not overheat me to the point that I have to take it off??  The answer is yes!!!!  I wore this hat on the day I ran my virtual run in a frigid 18 degrees, the coldest day I ran outside this year and this hat kept me warm but not too warm.  I kept the hat on whole time, even when my hands got overheated from my gloves and I had to take them off, my head remained just the right temperature with my Bondi Band hat in place.  This hat met all my expectations and then some but what else did I expect from a great company like Bondi Band, maybe they can make me some gloves…hint, hint!

bondi band3 298x500 Bondi Band Hat Review and Giveaway

I even roped my husband into wearing it on his run to see what he thought about the hat and now he asks to wear it every time he goes out for a run…..luckily for me the fabric bounces right back into it’s original shape or else his big head may have made the hat too big for me.  I am thinking I am going to need to buy him his own anyway because we can’t both wear it at the same time, so a fight my ensue if we only have one hat when we want to run together!

If you need a great hat that is light and comfortable but still keeps you warm on your cold runs be sure and check out this sweat wicking hat by Bondi Band.

You still have time to sign up for my virtual run and be entered to win your very own Bondi Band hat, follow the instructions via the Rafflecopter form below.

Otherwise you can stop by the Bondi Band website and check out all their great products!!  You can also “fan” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Sorry for such a late post today but I was preoccupied yesterday with football!!!  I am happy that after a super stressful game the Giants prevailed!!!!  Indianapolis here we come!!!

giantscollage Training Recap, Goals Revisited and a Nuun Review and Giveaway

After injuring myself the first week into training for the NYC Half-Marathon I really had to think about revisiting my goals for this race and figure out what I really wanted to accomplish.  I am still going to aim to achieve a 1:45 Half-Marathon but I have decided to push that goal until May where I will run the Long Island Half-Marathon which is flat and fast, an ideal race to achieve a PR.  This one change to my plan will allow for me to ease into training a little more cautiously and use the NYC Half as a training run.  I will continue to work with Adam to get me to my ultimate goal of a 1:45 Half-Marathon…..injury free!

Here is last week’s training recap:

trainingrecapplannedvsactual11 Training Recap, Goals Revisited and a Nuun Review and Giveaway

The top was my planned and the bottom is what I actually did.  I only ended up running 2x last week because although my right shin and ITB were feeling great after stretching and foam rolling, on the other hand my left shin just kept hurting so I knew it was either rest it completely or risk developing a stress fracture.  After  a few days of rest, ice, compression, foam rolling and stretching I am happy to announce I am 100% better and ready dying to run.

Here is this week’s plan:

12312training plan Training Recap, Goals Revisited and a Nuun Review and Giveaway

I want to start fresh so I am going to consider this to be week 1 of training toward my goal of a 1:45 Half-Marathon.  My first run will be tomorrow and the weather is looking great so I will be running outside!!!!  For the first time in my life I am nervous about running, I am so scared I am going to injure myself so I will be taking every precaution to prevent it.  Compression, foam rolling and stretching are going to be my weapons in this battle, along with a good training plan from Adam.  I will also listen to my body and make sure to relay this information to Adam so he can adjust my plan accordingly.  Communication is the key, namely my communication to Adam since he can’t read my mind.  I will achieve my goal and I will do it injury free……I hope.

My training is going to consist of many runs and an item that I have fallen in love with to help me stay hydrated and replace lost electrolytes is NUUN tablets.   I first tried NUUN at the Virginia Beach 1/2 Marathon race expo and it has been my favorite drink to keep hydrated during training ever since.   With less than 8 calories a serving these tabs don’t break the calorie bank like some sports drinks and they are sugar free!!!!    I am not usually a fan of the flavor and aftertaste associated with sugar-free products but NUUN has a fantastic flavor with no nasty aftertaste.  I have yet to find a flavor of NUUN that I dislike, my favorite being lemon/lime.

DBLOGICPC dBLogic Review and GiveawayI love to run to music, with that being said when running outside I usually keep the music low because I want to actually hear my surroundings….on the other hand when at home or at the gym I tend to “blast” the music so I can’t hear anything around me.  The biggest fear I have is if I “blast” the music too much I will develop tinnitus (ringing in the ears), so when dBLogic approached me about trying out their earphones that allow for great sound quality without increased volume, actually less volume, I jumped at the chance!!!!

dblogic dBLogic Review and Giveaway

Check out my vlog here:

I have to say that these earphones absolutely did their job!!  dBLogic uses SPL2 technology which allows you to listen to your music with great sound quality at a lower volume…..which equals healthier eardrums!

Pros:

  • Sound quality is awesome
  • Earbuds stay put even while running
  • I don’t have to “blast” my music
  • Comfortable
Cons:
  • I cannot hear anything else when I wear these, this is a con for running outside because basically I saw the shadow of the runner behind me before I heard them which could be dangerous.
My overall review is that these earbuds are fantastic but I will not wear them while running outside because I cannot hear my surroundings even on the lowest volume which could be dangerous.  I would recommend these for at home and gym workouts!!!!
You can find dBlogic on their website, Facebook and Twitter.   You can also be entered to win a pair by participating in my virtual run, enter below via the Rafflecopter form:
Disclosure: dBLogic provided me with a pair of earphones for review and a pair of earphones for giveaway.  All opinions expressed are 100% my own.
