Apparently I do not know how to listen to my body…..week one of training started out great but by Thursday I had already pushed myself too far. I woke up Friday with terribly sore shins and an irritated right IT band. I knew I should not have run on Thursday because I was extremely sore but I did anyway, I also neglected to tell Adam (my coach) how I was feeling, so it was not surprising that I injured myself. Stubborness + Stupidity = Injury.
This let the wondering if maybe I needed to take a step back and reevaluate my goals. Is a 1:45 half-marathon out of my reach, did I aim too high, can I really do this…….all these thoughts streamed through my head. I discussed this with Adam and he thinks I can pull back on the training and still achieve my goal, so I am going to give it a shot!!!
Here is my recap:
Not too bad considering my injuries. I am still slightly sore today so I plan to ice, stretch and foam roll…a lot. I am convinced that my lack of stretching definitely contributed to my injures this week so I plan to incorporate stretching and foam rolling into my schedule daily. I posed the question of stretching in some of my running groups on Facebook to get some insight into what other runners are doing and the feedback I received was amazing. It seems that some people are completely for stretching and some people don’t stretch at all, both groups are running injury free. The proven benefits of stretching are questionable but I believe everyone has to do what feels right to them and for me I need to incorporate stretching into my routine. After 2 days of stretching and foam rolling my shins and IT band are better which leads me to believe I made the right decision. This week I also plan to listen to my body thoroughly and if I am hurting I will be resting even if it means missing a run.
Here is this week’s plan:
Wish me luck!!!
