I was supposed to run with Sarah from Running (to keep up) With a Toddler on Saturday but do to my injuries we pushed our run until Sunday. We didn’t commit to any particular mileage for the run but I knew I wanted to do at least 3.5 miles for my virtual run, with possibly more depending on how my shins felt.
Sunday morning I woke up and checked the temperature which was a frigid 18 degrees with the wind chill bringing it down to 3 degrees. I hate the cold, I am actually allergic to the cold…..I literally break out in hives if I am not appropriately dressed, so I layered up, hoping to stay warm during the run. I also wore my Bondi Band hat for the first time and my running gloves…..I should have wore a scarf but I forgot to bring one with me.
If I wasn’t picking up Sarah at 8 am I definitely would have chickened out on running outside, that is the good thing about having a running buddy!!! We headed to the Norman J. Levy Preserve which was actually a landfill the the Town of Hempstead converted into a beautiful preserve. Sarah had never been so I thought it would perfect to take her to a new place to run!!! There are 3 miles of trails and when you are at the top the views are spectacular and you can actually see NYC!!!
We ended up running 4.55 miles total:
Not too bad considering it was freezing, windy and we ran uphill……half the route had no sun which made it even colder. I had some pics of the “run” but I accidentally deleted them…bad blogger! Here is my self portrait prior to leaving the house with my new Bondi Band hat:
Here are some pics of the preserve from an earlier run, just so you can get an idea of just how beautiful this preserve is:
Here are my splits for my Virtual run:
Official time: 39:41!!!
Our total run was 4.55 miles:
Thanks Sarah for a great run!!! I definitely would not have faced the cold without you!! It was a tough run because it was so cold and windy, plus I am not used to running hills but we all need a tough run every now and then….right??

Great run! I just ditched my running buddy so that I could run this morning before it rains, instead of this afternoon and risk having to do the TM. Rain in the winter is not an option for me. After reading your post, I’m feeling sooo guilty! Ugh
Don’t feel too guilty, I hate running in the rain so I may have done the same thing!!!
My sister’s fiance has the same allergy as you do! I hadn’t heard of it until she was dating him!!
Glad that you had a fantastic run – and congrats on your great time for your virtual run =) The scenary looked gorgeous!!!
It’s a weird allergy…never heard of anyone else having it until now…glad I am not alone. Thanks!!
Running buddies are the BEST!
Sara is only my 2nd running buddy and it is great, makes you get out there and run when you normally wouldn’t
Hooray for running buddies! Nice work on your virtual!
Thnks!!
I actually just came in from a windy, cold run. Dreaded going out but glad I did it. Your run looked beautiful–glad you had company and glad the shins cooperated!
Thanks!!! I hate cold, windy runs but it seems the only run you regret is the one you didn’t do!!!
I had no idea you were so close to me! I am in South Huntington!
Small world!
Gigi
Very small world!!
That run was bitter! Who would have thought that winding + no sunlight would leave you wanting some summer running?? Thanks for introducing me to the preserve! SO beautiful and I great change of scenery!
Thanks for running, it is nice to share a run with a friend especially a cold, windy one….
