It case you didn’t know it, I LOVE running!! What I have forgotten recently is how much I love rollerblading too! Yesterday I became antsy about not being able to run and not getting that cardio “high” I get from running so I decided to head outdoors to rollerblade. This winter has been unusually warm and free from snow, making it perfect conditions for rollerblading! Rollerblading is the closest I can get to running without all the impact that stresses my shin as long I as I don’t fall, which I didn’t!
I strapped on my NIKE rollerblades, which are my favorite thus far, they are not only super comfortable but they are super fast too!! I always wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards to protect myself in case of a fall which happens and if you are not protected properly you can sustain some pretty serious injuries. Always be safe, I may not look the coolest all geared up but I am as safe as I possibly can be if I sustain a fall. I always try to rollerblade in a park so I am usually on a smooth surface and away from heavy traffic, Cedar Creek Park being the best in the area for rollerblading.
I set my Garmin and off I headed out for about 30 minutes of heart pumping cardio!
I kept up a pretty decent pace, a little slower when I was going against the wind but overall not bad. I am feeling the burn today in my thighs and butt which means I worked all the right muscles!! The calorie burn according to Health Discovery is a little less than running:
I will take it!! Non-impact + no shin stress + a decent calorie burn = me happy!! If you are looking for some cross training for running and the weather is decent then you should definitely try rollerblading. If you are new to rollerblading make sure you have safety gear and make sure you know how to stop, take a class if you need because stopping on rollerblades can be difficult. Using trees and other inanimate objects is not always to safest technique (yes I have done this).
