The weather for this morning was predicted to be in the high 40′s low 50′s with rain, definitely not the ideal racing conditions. Despite the predications Chris and I planned to run this race anyway because it is a local charity that supports spinal cord research.
“The Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury, Inc. is a 501C3 federally tax exempt organization formed in 2003 as a means of raising funds for spinal cord injury research and providing community outreach and educational programs. The Fund is named after Joe Testaverede from Wantagh, Long Island. While Joe is lucky to be alive today, as a result of the injury, he is paralyzed from the waist down, and has lost dexterity in both hands. Joe is also the cousin of former NY Jets quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde.”
I was dressed slightly inappropriately for the weather but once I got moving I heated up right away!!! My Ink’N'Burn athletic wear was the best outfit at the race if I may say so myself and probably the most comfortable. The arm sleeves kept me warm enough so I didn’t have to wear a jacket while waiting for the race to start (it was about 50 degrees). The shorts were so comfy I would actually like to wear them all the time and I definitely need ten more pairs for my collection. My absolute favorite part of the outfit was the saying on the shirt and arm sleeves which is Run or Die!!!!!!!
I was planning on running a slow with Chris but about 1/2 mile into the race I felt energized at which point I took off with Chris’s permission. I did feel bad because I told him not to bring his headphones because we would be running together
This was a flat and fast course which I planned to run in about 29 minutes but as each mile passed I felt more energized and kept picking people ahead of me as targets to pass. I passed everyone I set out to pass and sprinted at the end which I am very proud of because sprinting has been an issue for me lately but not today.
I did get many compliments on my Ink’N'Burn outfit along the way and if they had a contest for best dressed I think I would have won!!
I ended up placing 2nd for my age group with a finish time of 27:06!!! Much, much better than I expected!!! Chris finished in 29:16 which was 13th for his age group!!!! Better than he thought he’d do too!!! This is why I love racing so much because you push yourself harder than you ever would on a regular training day!!!!
A great race!!! We did not stick around for the raffles or awards due to the rain but if I had known I had won second place in my age group I definitely would have stayed. :( Next year I plan to run this race and win 1st place in my age group with a new 5K PR for sure!!!
After the race we got to refuel with my favorite yogurt, Chobani!!!! I had a Chobani Cherry and Chris had a Chobani Blood Orange, both of which were awesome!!!!
Overall a great race day with a great race outfit that I look forward to wearing for many future runs and races!!!! I hope everyone had a great weekend!!!
Disclosure: Ink’N'Burn provided me with my outfit for free. All opinions expressed in this blog are 100% my own!
