What happens when you go out for a 3 mile run and the stars align?!?! You get this:
I don’t know why some days running just feels effortless….okay not effortless but today I felt like I could run forever. Was is the pre-run fuel or the weather or the outfit I was wearing or the sneakers?!?! Your guess is as good as mine but maybe I will repeat everything I did today next week!!!
What?? Did you say you want to know what I did today to have such an awesome run?! Hmmmm……well okay, I’d like to share plus then I will remember exactly what I did so I can repeat it next week!!!!
I had actually planned to get up early and run because I knew it was going to be a pretty hot day today but since I had a migraine yesterday I overslept this morning and wasn’t ready for my run until 11:30 am. At 8:30 am I had a protein pancake (courtesy of the Carrots ‘N’ Cake book) with almond butter and strawberries.
I had a medium Dunkin Donuts coffee with cream on the way to Angelica’s dermatologist appointment which was at 10am. It took me about an hour to drink that coffee mostly because when we got called in to see the doctor the medical assistant calling us in was like, “Are you Mom?” and I’m like yeah and then she proceeds to say that she needs to take my coffee and put it in their cafeteria. She actually tried to grab the cup out of my hand and I was like you can take her in and I’ll be right back. The girl asked where I was going and she sounded slightly annoyed when I said I would go put my coffee in the car. I don’t know about you but I was not giving up my cup of coffee to some random medical assistant to put in some random room but that’s just me.
After the doctors appointment we stopped at one store and then went home. By the time I got home around 11:15 it was already 80 degrees so I debated whether I should just wait until after dinner to run but my husband said it wouldn’t be too much cooler then so I decided to run. I drank 16 oz of Nuun, changed and headed out for a 3 mile run which meant I didn’t bring any fuel or fluid with me even though I told my husband if I felt good I would be running longer. I actually wore a fuel belt on this run but left the water bottles at home which is a big mistake especially when you are running in the heat but that 16 oz of Nuun kept me adequately hydrated through the whole 7 miles.
This was not a fast 7 miles but it was perfect! I have a route where I can turn at a couple of points to make the run into a 3, 4, 5, or 7 mile run and today I ended up running the whole 7 miles!!!
I learned during this run that it is not always about speed or trying to beat your last run but just about the pure enjoyment that comes with a long run. What I also learned during this run is that I want to run the NYC Marathon a similar pace because I want to actually enjoy my first marathon, as much as you can enjoy a marathon, and I also want to be able to train without becoming injured. I know in the future I will be working on my speed and I plan to run the L.I. Marathon in 2013 for time but for the NYC I just want to finish.
It is amazing the clarity that comes with running. I wish I could attach a tape recorder to my thoughts because I have so many good thoughts and ideas that I end up forgetting after my run. Just in case you didn’t know: I LOVE RUNNING!!!
