Running and Illness

by Toni Church on June 7, 2012

I have run the last 11 days in a row which is my longest running streak but unfortunately it ends today.  I wholeheartedly wanted to participate in the Runner’s World Run Streak but not when it comes to possibly jeopardizing my health.   It never seems to fail that when I get on a roll fitness wise I get sick.  Coincidence, I think not.  While I think it is great to workout and push your body I also know that rest is important which is something I have not given my body since beginning the run streak.

I have actually been coughing for a few days and developed a fever last night which left me feeling absolutely terrible today.  I really did want to run because I didn’t want to break the streak (I know, I am not well)  but based on my symptoms I knew I had to rest today and quite possibly tomorrow too.  It is a little frustrating but I have the NYC Mini 10K on Saturday which I want to be able to run so rest it is run streak or not.

After 11 days my streak has ended and that is okay, or at least I keep trying to tell myself that it is okay.  I will continue to follow the streak on twitter and encourage all the other participants but my body just cannot handle no rest at this point.

I am looking forward to the NYC mini 10K on Saturday and as of now I have no time goals I just want to run the race and have fun!!!

After the race I may be going to the Belmont Stakes depending on how I feel.  This could be a historic year possibly crowning the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years and I would love to be there to witness this event.

I received some disappointing news about my acceptance into an RN to BSN Bachelors program I applied to for September….I was put on the wait list.  Apparently they cannot accommodate all the applicants so if someone drops out I could still possibly be accepted for September otherwise my application will be reevaluated in January.  I am not used to this type of rejection especially considering I graduated Suma Cum Laude from my Associates degree program but I guess I have not choice but to wait now.

I always feel things happen for a reason and I have been wanting to become re-certified as a personal trainer so maybe now is the time.   I am considering ACE or NASM….any thoughts?

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!

What do you think about running streaks??  Do you think that not resting makes you more susceptible to illness?

I’d say you’re probably onto something with the lack of rest and illness correlation. I think some people can handle it (I know one streaker going on year 3) but others, no. I know my body needs rest, which is why I’ve never tried a streak.

Sorry about nursing school. Hopefully it will pan out!

Good luck Sunday!

Oh girl, so sorry you’re sick. That really stinks. And I hate to hear that about the nursing school. I’m not good with rejection like that either. I’ve heard really good things about NASM. As for the streaks? I’m gonna say no. I am prone to injury and need to rest. I am a firm believer in at least one rest day a week to let my body recovery. Plus I need the mental break too.

Thanks Heather!! I am already a nurse so school is not the end of the world but I just don’t like the rejection plus I had it planned that I would be starting my Bachelors in Spetember and now it is just getting put off again. I am def adding more rest no more streaking for me.
