What I Learned During 4 Rainy Miles…..

by Toni Church on June 13, 2012

I started my day with 30 minutes on the spin bike knowing that it was supposed to rain all day and I would most likely not get outside to run.  I also worked out to the Boom-Boom Bikini workout that was on Bex Life today which was awesome!!!  I started cleaning the house and at about 11 am I needed to run but it was raining and it was raining fairly hard but no thunder or lightening.  I debated for about 2 minutes and decided to just do it, I mean I couldn’t melt or anything.

What did I learn during this run?

  1. I actually enjoyed running in the rain, I didn’t melt or fall and it felt good.  Now the temperature was in the 70′s and humid, had it been in the 30′s and bitter I know I wouldn’t have enjoyed it quite a much.
  2. Next time I need something to wipe the excess water off my face.  I usually would use my sleeve but today I headed out in a tank top which left me without something to mop up all the water.
  3. The earphones that come with Apple products are no good for running, especially running in the rain.  By mile 2 these earphones were literally falling out of my ears and just would not stay so I just put them in my pocket and finished the run sans music.
  4. I do not like wet feet.  I am not sure that this is avoidable but I did not like the feeling of having wet shoes and socks.  Waterproof sneakers anyone?
  5. Last but not least I will now choose running in the rain over the treadmill unless it is thundering and lightening or under 50 degrees.
Not bad overall and I would definitely do it again, I only wish I didn’t have a full time job and I could have more days like this…..I would definitely get a lot more done!!!
Do you like running in the rain?  Why or why not?

Love running in the rain! It’s when you feel like a ‘real’ runner and the only other people out are clearly hard core. It’s also cooler, and somehow calmer.

I remember reading somewhere that if we waited for perfect conditions, we’d never run. Go you for just doing it!

SO true, perfect running is a dream, if we waited we would always fond a reason not to do it!

Sounds fun.. wear a hat and the rain will stay out of your eyes.. I didn’t like running in the rain at first either, but if it’s a light rain and not too cool, (and not too long a run) it’s refreshing!

I did the same thing last night! Actually, I didn’t realize it was supposed to rain until I stepped outside, then thought I’d beat the rain, but nope- I got drenched! It’s nice to remember the rain won’t hurt us… other than soaking wet shoes, I had fun!

I got these for the winter run series and then have not let me down yet. I have not jumped in a puddle or any thing but snowy roads and the occasional rainy day I have come home with dry feet :)

Like you said, it’s really not bad and can be kind of enjoyable. I always choose rain over the treadmill! There’s no getting around the wet feet, however. You just have to get those shoes off the second you finish so you won’t get chilled!

I think I would def choose the rain over the treadmill from now on!

I used to be a total fair weather runner until this past year. I became more focused on running and since I am not a fan of the treadmill, I knew I would have to brave the weather. I actually like running in the rain now. Usually I am the only one out there:)

I don’t think anyone is a fan of the treadmill, certainly not me and if that means running in the rain or snow I am all for it!

I have the same shoes that Missie linked to. I live in MN and if its not brutally cold I run outside in the winter, too…so I need water protection! The shoes don’t let you submerge your foot in the puddle because the very top is breathable webbing, but if you are running in the rain or snow…your feet will NOT get wet. Plus, they are great feeling shoes all around!

Running the rain is so nice!
