Today is National I Want You to be Happy Day – What brings happiness to your life?
Starting with the obvious, my family and friends bring me happiness, at least most of the time. Happiness is something that we have to create for ourselves. Life is not always happy and it certainly throws many challenges our way, but it is how we approach the challenges that can make or break our happiness.
I was in a position for awhile that I had just grown to despise, it made me unhappy everyday and this unhappiness infected my entire life, not just that aspect and it was both mentally and physically draining. When I moved on, I decided that no matter what was to come, I would make the best of it. I chose to approach my new position with positivity, despite any challenges, and I chose not allow myself to become enveloped into that cloud of unhappiness ever again.
I have always been a glass is half-empty type of person, leaning toward the negative rather than the positive. Pessimism is defined as “a state of mind in which one anticipates undesirable outcomes or believes that the evil or hardships in life outweigh the good or luxuries” (Wikipedia). For most of my life many people would describe me as a pessimist, the definition encumbers exactly how I used to think of life. I never focused on the positive, always the negative, because strangely I felt that focusing on the negative would never leave me feeling disappointed when the positive didn’t happen. I can tell you that this approach left me unhappy most of the time and unfulfilled, because I never took chances that could truly make me happy for fear disappointment. I had been let down and disappointed by people my whole life, so I used negativity as a defense mechanism to avoid it happening to me again. I wanted to be truly happy, so actively I changed my perspective and outlook to the positive, which has made a huge difference in how I feel every, single day!
It took a long time for me to be able to focus on the positive, to be truly happy with my life. I will admit it is still hard sometimes to focus on the positive, because negativity comes so easily, but I will never be that “glass is half-empty” girl again. Life is full of heartbreak, disappointment and challenges, but it is also fill with happiness, love and fulfillment. I have found that choosing to be happy and positive has allowed me to deal with the unhappiness and negativity in a much better way, making my overall life a more happy one.
Back to the original question, what brings happiness to my life?
