The Thursday before the NYC half was frigid, so cold it actually hurt my skin to be outside and that was the day I had to travel to NYC to pick up my race number and work at JackRabbit Sports as a representative of KT Tape.
My day started with a train ride to Penn Station via the LIRR at 8:30 am. A short 45 minutes later, I arrived in NYC. I have lived on Long Island my whole life, but had rarely ventured to NYC on my own until a few years ago, which leaves me with a great knowledge deficit in how to utilize the subway system without getting lost. Despite the twenty degree weather, I decided not to attempt the subway, instead I walked 17 blocks the expo.
Thankfully, I only got to the expo a couple of minutes early and the line was short enough that I didn’t have to wait outside forever in the freezing cold. I will tell you that I was in and out in less than 20 minutes, there is something to be said about going to an expo on a Thursday when it opens.
I picked up some Margarita Shot Bloks, which I have been wanting to try for awhile, and took a few pics before heading to JackRabbit Sports.
JackRabbit Sports was a short four blocks away, but in the freezing cold it felt like fifty. I had my doubts that many people were going to venture from the expo to the store due to the frigid weather, especially on the first day of the expo.
Everyone at Jack Rabbit Sports was super nice and they set me up right in the front of the store!
My friend Rawle Scope, who is a KT Tape representative for NY, asked me to help him out for the NYC Half expo as an official representative of KT Tape. He needed someone at Jack Rabbit Sports while he worked the expo, so that is where I ended up working all day, by myself. As a nurse, and a fan of KT Tape, I have become proficient in taping most of the lower body injuries associated with running, so although I was nervous to be on my own, I was confident in my abilities. It was an amazing experience to be able to represent a product that I believe and utilize for a good majority of my races.
Although it was slow due to the cold weather, I had about 15 people come in asking about the KT Tape and I taped about 10 people. Some people wanted to come back closer to the race and in more flexible clothing, although I had one guy who stripped to his boxers so I could tape his knee! I taped people with knee issues, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and Achilles tendonitis. Even though it wasn’t super busy, It was a great experience meeting so many runners and talking to them about running, injuries and KT Tape.
What I learned from talking to these runners is that most of their injuries occurred from overuse and overtraining and not enough cross training and stretching. As a nurse I felt it was my obligation to discuss with these people not only how to use KT Tape to help them manage their injuries, but also how they can prevent these types of injuries from occurring. While I love KT Tape and how it helps people continue to train through minor injuries, it is not a cure. With any injury that occurs the underlying cause needs to be addressed.
If you are injured you really need to look at the root cause of why you developed the injury in the first place. Just from talking with the runners I taped I can tell you that the biggest contributions to their injuries were inadequate training and not enough stretching, mostly due to lack of time, which is a dilemma I completely understand. I work, I go to school, I have a family and I have very little time to spare. With that being said, the little time I do have I would rather spend running than cross-training and stretching, unfortunately when I do this, I get injured.
Running and training for races requires commitment. KT tape is awesome and I love it, but in addition to using the tape make sure you have a good pair of sneakers, a training plan and that you are stretching and cross training. All of these items combined will give you the best chance of preventing future injuries.
If you are having pain for more than a few days make sure you see a doctor. A pain that does not go away go could be something serious, so get it checked!
Have you ever used KT Tape?
Disclosure: I worked at Jack Rabbit Sports as an official paid representative for KT Tape, all opinions on this tape are 100% my own.
