I was not an active child. I did not participate in sports, gym or any teams that required activity, mostly due to having severe, uncontrolled asthma. My main source of activity stemmed from walking to and from school and anywhere else I needed to go, until I turned 17 and got a car. At 19, after my first daughter was born, I knew I needed to include a more formal exercise regimen into my life in order to be healthy and to stay that way as I aged. In came running.
Running became my freedom, my stress relief and surprisingly, my cure for asthma. The more I ran, the less I suffered from asthma attacks and the less I needed prescriptions to control my asthma. At 23, my asthma pretty much disappeared, with the exception of when I was around cats. Now, my asthma is pretty stable, I do not suffer from many attacks unless I am exposed to cats or strong odors. Running freed me from the confines that the asthma caused me in my younger years.
Here is a picture from one of my very first races in 1999. This is with m mother-in-law and my daughter, then 2, when races still sent you actual pictures in the mail after the race.
Running has been and always will be my favorite activity. This weekend I will be running the NYC Half, a race I have been trying to run for the past three years!
I am ready to run this race, no time goal, just fun. I plan to enjoy the course and the race!!! After the NYC Half, my main focus for the rest of the year will be getting in tip top condition for the NYC Marathon.
Good luck to everyone running NYC Sunday and be sure to say hi if you see me!!!!
What was your favorite activity as a child?
