My running has been slow lately, to say the least. My 5K times use to be consistently between 26 and 27 minutes total and now they are mostly between 28 and 31 minutes total.
What has changed?
I stopped doing speed work, both at the track and on my weekday runs. I stopped monitoring my pace and started running naked, by naked I mean Garmin free. I wanted to enjoy running again and stop worrying about my times.
This method has worked for awhile, but I now find myself craving more speed, not on every run, but at least weekly. Marathon training starts in about 6 weeks and I am going to be following the Run Less, Run Faster plan from Runner’s World, which focuses on three quality runs a week, including a speed work day. I will be posting more details about this plan and my training in the upcoming weeks.
Now, I have been telling you how slow I have been lately, but this past Monday I actually surprised myself with how fast I ran a 5K. This particular run was in my new Asics Gel-Electro33 sneakers and it was the third time I have run in them. Maybe, the third time is a charm or maybe the stars aligned or maybe I am just getting my groove back, but I ran my fastest 5K in over a year in them on Monday.
The weather was perfect for this run, but I felt pretty sluggish the entire time. I actually stopped to walk for about 15 seconds towards the end of mile 2 and I checked my Runtastic app figuring that by the way I felt I was running about 11-12 minutes miles, but much to my surprise I was running quite a bit faster than I thought. I quickly started running again, only to get in my best pace of the day, an 8:23 mile. I can tell you positively I have not run an 8:23 mile for a very long time, at least a year ago, but probably longer.
These Gel-Electro33 sneakers are awesome, they are supportive and light weight, and they a nice big toe box that doesn’t crush my pinky toes. These sneakers have the perfect amount of support and definitely made my run a little easier.
Description from the Asics website:
“The GEL-Electro33™ debuts as the newest introduction of the Natural33™ by ASICS, constructed with FluidAxis™ aligned for the mild to moderate overpronator. Engineered mesh and Seamless Construction combine with the Natural33™ Specific Last for a slipper-like fit and feel. The Solyte® Midsole and Ortholite Lasting create the lightweight ride and underfoot comfort needed to electrify any run.”
Are these sneakers the reasons for my fast run??? Did these sneakers electrify my run??? I am pretty confident they did, but only time will tell and a few more runs!
