Happens to be Healthy Granola Review & Giveaway plus an interview with co-owner Amanda Hawthorne

Disclosure: I received this granola to try at no charge, no other compensation was received.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Amanda Hawthorne and her mother Laurie Hawthorne are the co-creators of Laurie’s Granola Creations “Happens to be Healthy” Granola! This granola came to fruition when Laurie decided change her diet by cutting out all refined sugars and hydrogenated oils.  Laurie took her own granola recipe and modified it tastes delicious without having added unhealthy sugars, fillers, preservatives, and trans fats. Laurie’s Granola Creations has been in business for about two years and they currently sell their product in a few mom and pop stores and 5 farmer’s markets on Long Island, as well a online.

I love granola and was really excited to try out Happens to be Healthy because it looked delicious and I love trying out products from local businesses.  Following your passions and started your own business is extremely difficult, so being able to give back to local small businesses is very rewarding, plus I give them a ton of credit for chasing their dreams.

Amanda, Laurie’s daughter, was nice enough to answer some interview questions for me:

1.  Why did you get into the granola business?

It’s a funny story actually, my mom began researching healthy eating and changed her diet to incorporate healthier options minus processed foods, refined sugar, and partially hydrogenated oils.  She made a crispy, crunchy, coco-nutty granola for herself as a healthy snack and after a few of her friends tried some they urged her to package and sell it because it was “just too good not to”.  We started in the Amityville Farmer’s market and the rest is history!! Now we are currently in 13 stores, 3 in San Francisco and 10 in the NY area, soon to be in some gourmet shops in Vermont as well!!  We recently had the privilege of displaying and sampling our product to worldwide food buyers at the Fancy Food Show at the Javits Center in Manhattan, NY! We have grown our business much quicker than we have ever imagined and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us!

2.  What makes your granola better/different than other granola?

We like to say our granola tastes great and “Happens to be Healthy” too.  Even people that are not self professed Granola-lovers try our product and are absolutely amazed by the crispy, crunchy and delicious nutty and coco-nutty flavor.  “It’s like eating dessert without the guilt” one of our customer’s said this past weekend! Also, kids love our granola their little fingers reaching up to grab as many samples as they can hold in their hands at the farmers markets.  We also come from a place of passion and the love of health and educating people about the health benefits of coconut oil and coconut sugar.  I like to say our granola company happened “Organically” (pun intended) and we are happy to see the exciting new adventures, each day brings!

3.  What is your favorite way to eat your granola?

I am embarrassed to say that I never really was a granola eater before my mom made her very first batch of homemade granola.  After I tried it, I was hooked and now I love to put it on Wallaby Greek Yogurt (Plain and unsweetened).  I also love to cut up and apple and top it with almond butter and put some of our granola on top for nice crunch factor and layer of texture! Yum Yum!

4.  Where do you see your business in 10 years?

When I initially read this question, I sat and stared at my laptop, watching the cursor flashing as the seconds passed by.  I considered where our little family business is now and pondered where I would like to see Laurie’s Granola in ten years.  My family and I have never truly considered ourselves business people, but creators and artisans who thrive on the connections we have made with our customers over the years.   We believe that every business decision and choice we make will lead us where we are meant to be. The late and great Maya Angelou once said “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”  Therefore, whether we are at a farmer’s market, shaking hands and sharing stories with our most loyal customers or inspiring new patrons to eat healthier from the shelves of stores across the country, our goal has and always will be to continue to spread joy, health, and happiness to the world by continuing on our authentic path

You can find Happens to be Healthy Granola on their website, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook!

Since this is a local company I actually got to meet Amanda when she personally dropped off some of her granola for me to taste.  I will tell you that I loved it at first bite!!!  I work nights and am always looking for something healthy to satisfy my snacking needs and this granola hit the spot, especially when paired with my cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee!!!

I tried out the original and the one with organic dates, both were great, but I really liked the one with the dates!  I love that I understand every single ingredient listed, because in regular granola there are usually some weird stuff that they use to preserve it.  This granola is free from preservatives, artificial ingredients, gmo’s, refined sugar, eggs, soy, dairy, wheat, cholesterol and trans fat, basically any crap!

Now I know you want to try it for yourself so just enter my giveaway via the form below:

Good luck all!!!
