This winter has been one of the worst I have lived through in years. From the bitter cold to multiple snow days to the lack of sunlight it is no wonder that the cold and flu season has been especially rampant. As a nurse and a mother my number one priority is my health and the health of my family which includes avoiding illness.
Here are some of the ways I stay #NYTough to avoid getting sick during the winter cold and flu season:
- Wash Your Hands Frequently!! Washing your hands with soap and water is the #1 way to prevent illness. When you are unable to wash your hands utilize alcohol based hand sanitizer to kill those germs.
- Avoid close contact with people that are ill. If a friend or family member is sick with a cold or the flu do your best to avoid close contact. This can be difficult when you have little kids because when they are ill all they want to do is cuddle and cough and sneeze on you, but you can still avoid catching their illness by washing your hands.
- If you are sick stay home!!! The CDC recommends that you stay home at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without using Tylenol or Advil), except to get medical attention. Nobody wants to call in sick, but it is irresponsible to spread your germs to your co-workers or anyone else. I am pretty sure I contracted the flu this year from a man in Dunkin Donuts who was on line behind me coughing. Please stay home if you are ill.
- Get vaccinated! As a nurse and asthmatic I get the influenza vaccination every year in order to protect myself, my family and my patients. This year despite the vaccination I did succumb to the flu, but if I hadn’t bee vaccinated I would have likely suffered from a more severe case.
This cold and flu season has been especially debilitating to NY and the rest of the country because this year’s flu vaccine missed the mark leaving us all susceptible to the flu. Despite my best efforts to avoid getting sick I succumbed to the flu. Thank goodness for my local urgent care center, Vicks and Puffs!
I love my local urgent care center because when I feel sick they are there! Plus, they are close to the my house and there usually a minimal wait time. I am literally in and out. In fifteen minutes I have a diagnosis and then I am ready to get my meds, go home and rest.
DayQuil is one of the best cold relievers I have encountered. It relieved my flu symptoms during the day while it’s counterpart NyQuil helped me sleep like a baby!! Colds and the flu are unavoidable, but with the assistance of Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil living through them is much easier!
Puffs are my go to tissue. I love Puffs plus with lotion because they don’t leave my nose feeling raw and irritated, which is just a horrible feeling when you have the flu. During the winter months I stock up on Puffs plus to help me and my family to stay #NYTough and get through the cold and flu season without red and sore nostrils!
