National Running Day is held every year on the first Wednesday in June. It is a day where runners all around the world can come together and share their passion for running. This day honors a sport than many of us love. Whether you run solo or with a group or both, today is a day to get out there and run!!!!
Why do I run???
Running enables me to conquer anything in life. When I am happy I run. When I am sad I run. When I am frustrated I run. When I am angry I run. When I have a problem I run. Are you sensing a pattern here? No matter what is going on in my life running makes it better. When I feel like I can’t, I run and all of a sudden I feel like I can. Running enables me to conquer my worries, fears, goals and anything else I may face in life.
In honor of this National Running Day I decided to conquer some hills. After I dropped Abby to the bus I headed to the Norman J. Levy preserve in Merrick. This preserve is a hidden gem. If you live anywhere near Merrick and you haven’t been to this preserve you are missing out. When I come here I can truly see the beauty that is Long Island. The craziest part about this preserve is that it is situated behind a dump and it used to be a landfill. Now it is a beautiful preserve that serves as a plant and wildlife sanctuary as well as a great workout destination.
This preserve is the one place I can run hills. These a many ways up to the top of the preserve which is 115 feet at it’s highest point. I chose the pathway that is adjacent to the fishing pier. To get to this pathway it takes about 8-10 minutes which is perfect for a warm up.
The hill workout I did today is as follows:
- 10 minutes
- 90 seconds x 1
- 60 seconds x 1
- 30 seconds x 4
- 4:17 x 1 ( I decided to see how long it would take me to run from the base to the top of the hill. The views were worth the effort!)
- 23 minutes
Total: 3.78 miles
I conquered the hills!!! I loved every minute of my run today, well, except the part where I stepped in a hidden puddle and soaked my right foot. I quickly shook it off and finished my run without letting it get me down!! I enjoyed communing with nature and getting to see all the wildlife!!! I will be running all my hills here until I leave for Tampa in August!
How did you celebrate National Running Day?
