Hearing is a luxury that many of us take for granted, especially if you have had it your entire life. What if you could never hear another song or the voice of your loved one?? I am a runner who avidly enjoys running outdoors and my hearing helps me stay in tune with the environment and aware of my surroundings. The outdoors can be a dangerous place and being able to hear when I am running my is important for my safety. Hearing is also important for motivation, especially during races. Hearing the crowds yelling my name during the NYC Marathon last year is one of the major reasons I made it through that race!
It is scary that at 37 I am already having trouble hearing when there is any type of background noise present. As a matter of fact I have trouble hearing many people when there is any background noise present, which can be both frustrating to me and the people talking to me. This is considered to be mild hearing loss, but I a fear that it is only the beginning for me.
As a nurse who practiced in the homecare environment for over 7 years I can attest to how prevalent hearing loss is and the limitations that people are met with when they do seek help for it. Most of the elderly are on a tight budget and hearing aids are very expensive. Many go without hearing devices due to the lack of insurance coverage and this can severely impact their quality of life.
If hearing health is NOT a covered benefit for you… you can take a stand and request a change. EPIC has created an advocacy flyer that anyone can just share to start a conversation with their HR professional. Download it at: http://www.epichearing.com/listenhear/resources/
Do you or someone you know have hearing loss?? Are you covered for hearing tests and aids by your insurance?
