What’s a trip without a race?? Especially a race on the last day of said trip. It seems when I decide to run a race on vacation it has to be on the last day of vacation. In the past I have run the Virginia Beach Rock’n’Roll Half right before we drive eight hours home to NY. Is it ideal, no, but it was the way the race always worked out. I figured why not keep that tradition especially when I found out that one of my favorite 5Ks was going to be while I was in NY. So what it was on the last day of vacation at 5pm, I still had to do it and I decided my husband had to do it too. Ironically one of my old NY friends who moved to Jacksonville was also going to be in NY during the race and he decided to do it too!
I really had no goals going into this race until I got there and then I had two goals, to finish in under 30 minutes and beat my husband. Usually I think this race is crazy hot, I mean it is always at the end of June and at 5pm, but since moving to Florida this was actually cool for me.
After we picked up our bibs, we took a picture with the family and then headed to the start which was about a half a mile away.
The race started promptly at five and I took off, leaving my husband and Mike tor run their own races. I, as usual, ran the first mile too fast at an 8:42 pace. I never pulled out my camera during the race even when I saw a man running in a full on suit and dress shoes because I just needed to concentrate on running.
The rest of the race was a struggle to keep up with the girl in front of me. Sometimes during races I just pick someone who seems a little faster than me and I try to stick with them. We did some “leap frog” at the end, but I ended up pulling out in front. As I was about to turn the corner to the finish a runner to my right vomited everywhere. It threw me off for a few seconds because I wanted to make sure he was okay and when I saw that he was I sprinted the last 0.15 miles to the finish. My father-in-law got a great shot of me finishing:
About two seconds after I finished my husband popped up right behind me. Thanks goodness for me he didn’t end up beating me at the very end because I would have never heard the end of it. Hear are my splits:
I found the man running in the suit after the race and I had to get a pic with him. Apparently he started doing this for charity and he even ran the NYC Marathon in a full on suit with dress shoes!!! Now this is also his business. I plan to feature him on my Running Inspiration Series!
And that is all folks! It was a great race and a great way to end our NY vacation. It was nice to catch up with my old running community and to see so many running friends. Who knows, maybe I will do it again next year!
Have you run a race on the last day of your vacation?
