Each Friday my Running Inspiration Series will feature the story of an amazing runner. This week I am featuring Marc from Train with Marc. I know Marc virtually and am super excited to learn more about him and to be able to share his running story with all of you via the Q&A below.
How did your running journey begin? I started running my freshman year of HS. My high school program was very successful and I found out at an early age that I could run fast. By the time I graduated, I was not only hooked on running, but also a state champion and signed on to run track and cross country for Villanova University.
What is your favorite race and race distance? My favorite race distance is probably 5k. It takes the right amount of distance training and speed training and I can recover quick enough that I can race multiple times a month if I choose to.
What is your race day routine? Wake up about 3-4 hours before the race. I get a light breakfast (I prefer being hungry with an empty stomach, rather than full). 1 hour before the race, I’ll do a light warm up of anywhere from 1-3 miles and then do drills and active stretches to get loose. Right before the race, I’ll do striders to make sure I’m fast and ready to run hard during the race.
Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement your running? I try to eat a healthy and balanced diet. I don’t adhere to any specific “diet” or plan, but I eat when I’m hungry and try to find healthy snacks to supplement my main meals.
What advice would you give to a newbie runner? Start slow. Don’t get frustrated and seek the help of someone who’s been there and done that. When in doubt, ask questions and don’t be afraid to have setbacks.
What is your best running memory/favorite race? Running side by side with Shalane Flanagan at the Philadelphia Half Marathon. We ran 8 miles at 5:05 pace before she pulled away from me. I ran well, but she beat me pretty handily over the last 3 miles.
