I am not a gym person. Don’t get me wrong, belonging to a gym has it’s advantages, but mostly I just never use one enough to justify the cost. I have always had some sort of fitness equipment in my home-weights, elliptical, treadmill, bike, etc. Since moving to Florida and into a new house this past April, I just haven’t a chance to set up an at home gym space, until now.
I have a two garage which houses everything but cars, so I had a pretty decent space to set up my home gym. The disadvantage of the garage is that it is not air conditioned, which is okay right now, but when the hot Florida summer hits, it will get pretty hot in there. I may have to invest in a fan when that happens.
My must have equipment for my home gym would be some sort of cardio equipment other than a treadmill. As a runner I prefer to run outside and when I can’t I would much rather cross train indoors on a piece of lower impact cardio equipment like a bike, elliptical or rower would all be perfect. Thanks to Kohl’s I was able to add all three of these pieces to my home gym. The elliptical (pictured below) offers a smooth workout with a good amount of added resistance. I also offers a Jillian Michaels training plan that is already programmed into the elliptical, all you have to do is pick the day and week out of your workout and the elliptical does the rest!
Four Steps for Creating a Home Gym
- Designate a space: Find a space where you will be able to fit your equipment and where you will have enough space to work out.
- Set a budget: The best part about a home gym is that it can accommodate any budget. You can get a jump rope and resistance bands for less than $25 or you can outfit your gym with the latest and greatest for over $2000. I think a $500 budget will get you just about everything you want, without breaking the bank.
- Decide on equipment: Once you have set a budget then you can decide on your must have equipment for your home gym. Weights can be expensive, but resistance bands can do the same job for cheaper. Not enough money for a treadmill or elliptical? Then maybe get a bike and jump rope. The possibilities are endless and Kohl’s Fitness Page offers everything you could possibly need or want at great price! My home gym included a rower, elliptical, bike, weights, exercise bands, exercise balls, jump rope, yoga mat and an awesome back massager (also from Kohl’s).
- Design your space (and set up any equipment): The rower, elliptical and bike I received from Kohl’s were all super easy to set up and let me tell, easy set up is a definite plus. I personally have set up many pieces of exercise equipment over the years and these three pieces were by far the easiest. Check out Kohl’s fitness equipment page to see all that they offer.
Once all your equipment is set up you are ready to design your space. I have my cardio equipment set up so they face outside, that way if I want I can open my garage and have a view. I have three shelves where I store my weights and other equipment for easy access. However you decide to set it up just make sure it is conducive to exercise. If you have to move too many things around every time you workout, you may decide to just skip it.
Once you complete the fourth step all that is left is to start working out!!! I personally love all the equipment that Kohl’s sent me. My favorite is the rower!! I was actually researching purchasing a rower and was overwhelmed with all the different types and the high prices. This rower works great and is reasonably prices ($191.99 on sale now). It offers a smooth row with plenty of resistance for a great workout!!!! The bike is awesome too, because I can get work done on the desk while burning calories!!!!
Once I add a kettlebell, pull-up bar and some medicine balls I think my gym will be complete. Creating this home gym has been an awesome experience and it all came together in time for the New Year! Thanks Kohl’s!!!!
What would be your must have item for a home gym?
