Today is the 2nd annual Blog Your Heart Out Day, created last year by Angela Manzanares at fitlosophy in an effort to raise awareness in the fight against heart disease in women. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, worldwide 8.6 million women die from this disease each year. These a very scary statistics, and awareness is one of the key factors in helping to reduce these numbers. Many of the risk factors associated with heart disease can be prevented through good diet, weight management, stress reduction, physical activity and smoking cessation. Education is the key to successful reduction of death associated with heart disease especially in women.
The warning signs of a heart attack in women are generally vague in comparison to men who usually develop chest pain and pain down their left arm, the classic symptoms of a heart attack. Women generally feel weak, fatigued, sometimes anxious, like they have the flu. Most women never even experience chest pain during a heart attack, one of the reasons so many women die from heart disease, the symptoms are just ignored or attributed to indigestion or other conditions. Every women should be familiar with the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and stroke. Just by familiarizing yourself with these signs can save your life or life of someone you love.
