I woke up this morning to sunshine, the birds chirping and of course my 2 year old screaming, “juice, juice”. It felt like spring until I opened the door to let my dog Comet outside….brrr! At 7 am it was 21 degrees, not the ideal temperature for me to run in but I was hoping it warm up a little by my 8 am departure.
Pre-run fuel was plain non-fat Greek yogurt with 1/2 mashed sweet potato, pumpkin pie spice, wheat germ and chia seeds.
It tasted great and I ate it about 1 hour prior to my run.
At 8 am the temp was slightly warmer at 25 degrees, still not ideal but I layered my clothes and hoped I would warm up quickly. The only thing I was missing was some gloves, I lost mine about a month ago and have yet to replace them. Here I am pre-run freezing my butt off.
Even though it was cold there was no wind at all, which made the run feel easier and thankfully warmer. I warmed up after a mile and by mile 4 I had stripped off my outer layer and tied it around my waist for the remainder of the run. I brought some GU with me for mid-run fuel but I didn’t use it. The run was relatively easy but I did develop a lot of phlegm and heartburn which I blame on the yogurt, the dairy did not agree with me. Next week I will try something different, maybe some Ezekiel bread with PB and banana.
Any suggestions?
I completed 8 miles in 1:14:50. Here is the breakdown mile by mile, courtesy of my Garmin:
- Mile 1: 9:03.06
- Mile 2: 9:18.05
- Mile 3: 9:21.12
- Mile 4: 9:30.59
- Mile 5: 9:32.22
- Mile 6: 9:27.57
- Mile 7: 9:16.64 (negative split!)
- Mile 8: 9:19.96
Not too bad for my second long run and I was even able to decrease my pace during the last 2 miles. I ran last week’s 8 mile run in 1:19:09, almost 5 minutes longer than today’s run. I think this has to do with running outdoors, I seem to be naturally faster outside than I am on the treadmill. Overall a great training run!
Tomorrow is a rest day and I plan on doing some yoga to stretch my muscles that I know are going to be sore after today’s run. Sunday is an easy 5 miler hopefully outside, weather permitting. I hope everyone has a great weekend!!
Do you find that you run faster outside vs. running on the treadmill?

I always run faster outside than on a treadmill and only use a treadmill when I absolutely cannot run outside. Great job…Keep it up!!!
