As a mother working or not it can be difficult to find time for yourself let alone time to exercise. We take on many roles in our day to day life including but not limited to mother, wife, professional, housekeeper, chef, and chauffer. From the moment we get up in the morning to the moment we go to sleep at night it is go, go, go.
Most of my adult life I worked during the week so I understand the difficulties of balancing work with family. Now I am fortunate enough to have a career that allows me to work weekends and be at home during the week with my 2 year old, you may think this makes life easier but that is not necessarily true. Being a stay at home mother is hard work, just as hard as any career and finding balance and time is just as difficult.
We all deserve time for ourselves, I know taking time to exercise makes me a more calm and patient mother and person in general. Here of some of my tips of how to work in exercise or just time for yourself:
- Get up early in the morning before everyone else. I am an early bird by nature so this is a no brainer for me, I usually get up at 5:30-6 and workout while the family still sleeps and I am done before my husband leaves for work. Getting my training in early makes me feel great and ready to face the day energized. It also keeps me from procrastinating later in the day when I get busy and just skip exercise because time has gotten away from me.
- On the other end of the spectrum if you are not a morning person you can exercise after work or after the kids are in bed for the night. This works for many people especially if they are night owls, not so much for me. If I wait until nighttime I will usually find an excuse not to work or I am just too tired.
- Include your families into your workout. When I do yoga or workout DVD’s my 2 year old does them with me, she does a really great downward dog. I give her two 1-lb., hand weights and she works out with me, not only can I get my workout in but I am setting a good example. When the weather is nice I take my 2 year old with me in her jogging stroller when I run or roller blade. As a family we also go biking, walking and to the park. You can include activity into your family time, it may not necessarily be formal exercise but it’s fun and the whole family gets to be active together.
- Delegate. Just because you are the mom doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself. Delegate chores to other family members to take the load off yourself, so that you can make time for yourself…..you deserve it!!
These are just a few tips to help you make time for exercise and yourself. When I take time for myself I am a better more patient person with my family so they to benefit from me taking time for myself too.
