Due to my annoying shins and ITB this week my “Friday Favorites” revolve around healing. My right ITB band and shin are feeling much better after stretching and foam rolling, but my left shin is not cooperating so I am resting today and tomorrow with the hopes I will be miraculously healed by Sunday. I will also be icing, stretching and foam rolling my heart out!!! In addition I am currently reevaluating my goals….more to come on that on Monday.
Here are my favorites this week:
- CEP Compression Socks: I love my CEP compression socks, they not only help increase my performance during running they help reduce the soreness I feel after running. I also find that they are helpful in prevention of and recovery from shin splints. The acronym for treating acute injuries is R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and my CEP’s are a big help with the compression part as I have been pretty much wearing them all day every day!!!
- Foam Roller: I have severely underutilized my foam roller since I bought it, but this week I have made up for it by foam rolling a few times a day. My right ITB is perfect now and my right shin is 95% but my left shin still needs some work. Foam rolling definitely has helped heal my injuries because when I started I could really feel the tightness/pain in each area and day by day the tightness/pain has improved. Needless to say I am loving my foam roller this week and I will be incorporating it into my daily regimen.
- Yoga/Stretching: When I started my 1/2 marathon training I neglected to stretch and I really feel that this contributed to my injuries. They are differing opinions as to whether stretching and yoga actually help to prevent injuries, I feel everyone needs to do what is right for themselves but in my case I need to stretch to prevent injuries. My muscles feel less stressed and more relaxed so I plan on incorporating stretching into my daily routine and yoga at least 3x a week.
- Arctic Ease: Arctic Ease has been a lifesaver. Compression + cooling = soothing sore shins. These cryotherapy wraps help compress and cool the injured area for hours and are reusable!!! When I take of my CEP’s I put on my arctic ease.
