To beat the awful heat that has been lingering on Long Island the last few days I got up at 5am yesterday and headed to the gym to complete my virtual 10K.  I have not been on a treadmill since my stress fracture and I was a little nervous because I feel like the treadmill was the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak in regards to my injury in February.   I tend to pound and it seems when I run on the treadmill the pounding is worse or it just sounds worse.  I am happy to say that I made it through my 10K on the “dreadmill” and thus far my legs feel pretty good.

I prepped for Friday morning by laying out everything I need for my run including:

  • GU Roctane-When I wake up early for a run I have a hard time eating prior because I just can’t get up early enough.  For a 5am run I would have to be up by 4 am to eat and on a work day that just isn’t happening so if I am running over 3 miles and haven’t eaten I will bring either a GU Roctane or Sharkies with me.  Today was a GU Roctane in Island Nectar which is one of my favorite flavors!!!!
  • Sparkle Skirt-I have been practically living in this skirt lately because it is just so comfy, I really need to get a second one!
  • Nike tank top
  • CEP Compression socks
  • Reebok Real Flex sneakers
  • Click Bondi Band
  • GYMBOSS
  • iPad
  • Earphones

When I have everything laid out for the morning it is 100 times easier to get up and go without making excuses.  I was at the gym by 5:15 am and out by 6:30.  I ran my 10K in 57:23 following this ladder workout I posted about yesterday!  I was happy to complete the run pain free because although I have been feeling good I still get nervous every time I run that I am going to get injured, I hope this feeling goes away soon.

I absolutely love GU!!!  I find it is one of the easiest ways to get in some fuel in while running that doesn’t irritate my stomach.  I use it during long runs and during runs longer than 3 miles when I have not eaten anything prior to run like when I run first thing in the am.  GU is easy to carry, easy to swallow and tastes good!!!!  My favorite flavors are Island Nectars and Blueberry Pomegranate!

You can read my previous review of GU products here.

You can read more about GU on their website.  You can also connect with GU on Facebook and Twitter.

GU is one of the sponsor’s of my Welcome to Summer Virtual Run and they are providing one lucky participant with a GU Energy Sampler!!!!

Disclosure:  Gu provided the prize for the virtual run.  I was not compensated in any other way for this post.  The opinions expressed in this blog are 100% my own.

What do you use for fuel during your runs?
