Week 1 Marathon training is complete!!!!! Successfully and injury free!!!
I have recently joined the We Are Athletes Racing Team and have decided to join them for their first ever marathon training program. I am trusting in my Coach who happens to be a level 3 USATF Coach and am literally going into training only cowing one week at a a time which is hard for me because I like to plan ahead.
My first run was Tuesday night at the track and consisted of 400 x 2 repeats. My left quad was aching which is a first for me so I didn’t push as hard as I could have but I felt the burn of the workout anyway. I felt if I pushed to hard I would get injured so instead I listened to my body, yes I listened to my body and took it easy!!!
I ran a total of 3 miles. 1 mile warm up and 2 miles speed work! This was in addition to the drills we do for about 30-40 minutes prior to starting running. Tuesday night was tough because of the humidity but it was an awesome workout anyway!!
This was my first workout for marathon training and when I talked to my Coach (Fred) about what else I should do in addition to tonight’ workout, hill work on Thursday and Sunday’s long run he said nothing. Nothing scared me because I was thinking I should be running close to 30 miles and he just said stick with these workout this week and next week we will talk. I took a deep breath and said okay but are you sure I will be able to run the marathon in 4 months and he said absolutely so I am putting my trust into my coach who is absolutely awesome!!!!!
The next workout of the week was hills on Thursday night. I met the group at a school in Plainview and then we ran 1 mile to the start of the hills. We then ran up the hill, which was about 1/4 mile , fast and then slowly ran down 4 x!!! It was hot, humid and completely sticky but an awesome workout. We then ran up a quarter of the hill 2x followed by a cool down back to the start! I have to say that I would never have completed this type of hill training on my own so I am grateful to be a part of this team.
Hill workout ended up being about 4 miles total. I know you can’t tell the extent of the hill by the pics but for a Long Islander used to flat land this was a big hill!!!
The last training run of the week was was the long run this morning! This was a depletion run where we do not eat breakfast or eat or drink any fuel other than water in order to train or bodies to burn fat. I was a little skeptical about this run at first but was assured I wouldn’t doe during the run. About 12 of us met this morning at 7:30 am and set out for our first long run of marathon training.
One of the runner’s Tom hid a 24 pk of water at mile 5 for all of us so we didn’t have to carry our water! I thanked Tom profusely because I hate carrying water and I will thank him again!!!! It was nice to have cold water (he put ice on top of it to keep it cold) to look forward to at the halfway mark.
The first 1/2 mile consisted of drill work to warm-up. After the warmup the run consisted of one easy mile followed by one mile at 10K pace. My group did pretty well the first 5 miles and the cold water awaiting us was a huge motivator!
This picture does not do the seat that was dripping off of me justice…….I was drenched!!! We rested for a few minutes, grabbed an extra water bottle and headed back for the next 5 miles. The next 5 miles were rough to say the least but we all survived to run another day.
Rosa and I post run!!! Rosa was awesome she kicked our butts and motivated all of us to do better!!!
Post run we cooled down for a 1/2 mile and then ran some pick ups which is sprints for 20 seconds and then rest for 20 seconds. Pick ups helps us to recover and regain good form. This was an awesome run and was even more awesome by having so many great people to rum with!!!!
Here is my fuel for this run:
I felt like I wouldn’t be able to complete the run without some fuel but I was wrong. I was feeling hungry around mile 4 but once I got some fluid in me at my 5 I felt great!!!
Total mileage for the week: 16.75 miles
Low mileage?? Yes!!
Efficient mileage?? Yes!!!
I am ready for what this week holds!!!!’
How are your training plans going??
