My friend AnnMarie and her husband co-own a CrossFit gym and I have been saying for the longest time that I am going to try it out, but I just could not find the time, that is until last Friday. I tried CrossFit for one week about three years ago, and I really loved it, but I had just returned to work full-time and it just wasn’t in my budget. Fast forward three years later and I am yearning for some strength training in my life, so I decided to give CrossFit another try.
I met my friend AnnMarie at CrossFit Invasion in Bellmore last Friday at 9:30 for a workout. I was a little nervous, because I haven’t lifted weights consistently for awhile, but I was happy to have AnnMarie and her husband Sean there for support.
We did the warm-up and fitness workout listed below (I know it’s not a great picture):
The warm-up was a workout in itself, at least for me. The actual workout consisted of completing all the exercises in the fitness column for the given amount of reps for time. In addition, every minute on the minute you had to drop the bar and do 3 burpees. By the time I would do the burpees and get the bar back over my head, I would only be able to squeeze out a few reps before having to do more burpees. Needless to say I was dripping sweat.
I am in the picture on the left, and don’t let it fool you, I have no weights on the bar at all. I actually thought I was lifting a 45 pound bar, but in reality I found out the next time I was there it was on fifteen pounds. I can say that I finished a whole CrossFit workout without dying and I loved every minute of it. I can tell you first hand that all the trainers I met there are amazing! They are very hands on and continuously helping everyone during their workout so that they can do their best, safely!
AnnMarie was amazing, we faced each other during the workout so I would be able to see her do the exercises and she just plowed through this workout like a champ, with actual weight on her bar, unlike me. What I love about CrossFit is that the workout is so intense you get such an adrenaline rush from finishing it!
I am officially hooked! I am going to do basic training, which is where they show me all the workout moves with the proper form and then I am going to sign up for an unlimited package for June! After June, I will probably cut back to twice a week due to marathon training, but my plan is to visit CrossFit regularly. Right now my upper body is so weak I can barely do three good form push-ups off my knees, pretty pathetic.
If you live in the area you should definitely check out CrossFit Invasion!! They are on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore. You can learn all about what they have to offer on their website and you can also follow them on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
Have you done CrossFit? What are your thoughts?
