What I’ll Miss About Summer Running
Guest post by Kelly Caiazzo of www.iamrunningthis.com
We runners complain a lot about the heat and humidity of summer running. And it IS tough. There’s no question that the summer months are challenging. It’s demoralizing to see your pace drop for the same amount of effort. When you’re too hot standing still, it certainly doesn’t make you want to run.
But there are some beautiful parts of summer running that I’m trying to remember and cherish now, before August is over and those cool fall days start creeping in. Things I will miss in October, and daydream about by February.
Early morning runs: I never get up before breakfast to run during the fall or winter, because by then it’s comfortable to run any time of day. There’s something magical about those early morning runs that I always miss come fall.
Sweating hard: Ok, sort of gross, but it’s kind of nice to come back from a run dripping in sweat, and that happens a lot easier if it’s close to 90 degrees out. It’s hard not to feel like you nailed the workout when you come back drenched in evidence of your own awesomeness, even if the heat slowed you down a bit.
Frozen post-run treats: There’s nothing like throwing some frozen watermelon chunks in a blender with some coconut water after a hot weather run. Post run hot chocolate just doesn’t do it for me, even in January.
Extended daylight: Running before breakfast or after dinner is safer and more enjoyable in the summer months. I remember going for a long run last fall and getting caught in the dark because I forgot that the sun was starting to set by 5 p.m.!
Running in the rain: Cold rainy runs can be downright painful, but in the summer, a few miles in a warm rain is just pure magic.
You always know what to wear: Tank top, shorts, and go! No strategic layering, and no circling back to pick up the windbreaker you stashed behind somebody’s bushes. You might always be too warm, but at least it’s consistent and you know how to prepare.
