Let me start off by saying this has been an epic weekend and we haven’t even reached marathon Sunday! I have met some amazing bloggers, elite coaches and athletes and the ASICS team (including the CEO). None of this would have even been possible without ASICS and I want to thank them again for hosting me during this most epic weekend.
I am going to share with some of my awesome weekend before I tell you all my disappointing news.
It has been amazing and the weekend is not over yet! Yesterday morning we had a shakeout run (see pic above) and this was going to be the determining factor if I was going to attempt to run the marathon or not. As many of you may know I injured myself at the beginning of October during my long run. I saw a doctor who thought if I rested that it may still be possible to run. I talked with my coach who also said if it felt good I was trained enough to finish. As we got closer and closer to the race and I still had pain my hope began to dwindle, but I still had hope, that is u til the shakeout run yesterday where all hope was lost.
I started the shakeout run with the hope I would be pain free, unfortunately for me I was not. I got about a half a mile into the run and had to stop and turn around. That was the moment it became real. That was the moment I knew I wouldn’t be running on Sunday. I really had hoped for a different outcome, but I cannot put my health in jeopardy to run a marathon. So I will take a DNS on Sunday and be the biggest cheerleader for my team and everyone else out there running!
I was excited to pick up the packets with my team mates, but incredibly disappointed at the same time:
This number will be unused, but it will serve as a reminder that I worked hard to get to NY and due to unfortunate circumstances it is a race I will not run. I see runners running injured all the time and I personally do not think it is the right thing to do and I don’t want to encourage anyone to do it. With that in mind I will DNS on Sunday even though it is breaking my heart and I do something else I have always wanted to do, cheer for all the amazing NYC marathon runners!
If you are running tomorrow have an amazing race! I will be cheering you on!
