Each Friday my Running Inspiration Series will feature the story of an amazing runner. This week I am excited to feature my virtual friend Kim from Running On The Fly. I am excited to share more about her running via the Q & A below:
How did your running journey begin? Like a lot of runners, I did not grow up in running shoes. I have never struggled with my weight, but I did want to get in better shape and incorporate some fitness into my life. I had done a few 5K’s here and there, but never trained for them. I set a goal to to run a 5K (in 2005), and run the ENTIRE race without any walking. After a couple months of training, I did the race…and finished much faster than I thought possible.
Why do you run? I run mainly to stay in shape, but also to see just how far I can go. I don’t think I do it for stress relief, and I’m fine if I don’t run every day. I just like that I found a sport that I can do my way and on my own terms…and at my own convenience.
What is your favorite race and race distance? My favorite race is Dam to Dam (a half marathon in Des Moines, IA), it was my first-ever big race so it has a great deal of sentimental value to me. Recently, I ran my 9th consecutive D2D…and I’m in no hurry to stop. Obviously, the half marathon distance is my favorite (currently, I have done 28 20K’s/13.1’s)!
What is your race day routine? It varies.
What is your favorite piece of running gear? Gosh…it’s hard to name one favorite thing, but it would have to be my ipod because I LOVE having music with me.
What advice would you give to a newbie runner? Be patient with the process. You do NOT have to run every day to be a “runner,” and you don’t have to train the exact same way someone else does.
What is your best running memory/favorite race? My first marathon was awesome in so many ways. Perfect weather, lots of crowd support, no fueling issues, and no hitting the wall. A total stranger ran me in on the final mile…and through our conversation, I told him it was my first 26.2. He repeatedly told the crowds of spectators, “Hey this is Kim! This is her first marathon!” Then, as soon as we made it across the finish line, he grabbed the race director and introduced me to him…and the director thanked me for choosing that race (Quad Cities Marathon 2013) for my first marathon. How do you top that?
Kim became a serious runner in 2005 and has not looked back. In 2008, she ran her first 20K, and has been hooked ever since. The half marathon/20K distance is her FaVoRiTe because it is far enough to challenge her endurance, but short enough to easily accomplish. On September 22, 2013 she officially became a marathoner! And….on July 18, 2015 she ran my first ULTRA!
Thank you Kim for sharing your running story with us!!! Each week I am so inspired!! Check out the other Running Inspiration posts here.
