On Friday’s my Running Inspiration Series will feature the story of an amazing runner. This week I am featuring Deborah from Confessions of a Mother Runner. Deborah and I have been virtual friends for quite awhile and I really hope to meet her someday in person. This week I am super excited to learn more about her and to be able to share her running story with all of you via the Q&A below:
How did your running journey begin?
I hated running in my younger years and was really more of a gym/cardio girl for the longest time. Remember step aerobics? In 2003 I tore my ACL while skiing. While rehabbing my knee at the gym, I heard a trainer say “she will never be able to run again”. Well that did it for me! I was determined to start running. I remember my first “run” where I could literally only make it once around a track.
Why do you run?
Running has become such a big part of my life. After starting my MRTT chapter, running is now a huge part of my social life. It’s my favorite way to catch up with friends and also keep myself motivated. I can’t imagine my life now without my MRTT friends. I am so lucky to also have the opportunity to share my passion for running with the Girls on The Run teams I coach.
I truly love to have the opportunity to show young girls how running and bonding with their peers can help to build their self esteem and improve their health. I never expected to love coaching so much! With a background in adolescent psychotherapy it seems like the perfect fit for me now.
What’s your favorite race/distance?
I would say a 10 miler is one of my favorite distances. 10 miles is enough to challenge me to keep pushing myself and stay in running shape but at the same time, training for a 10 miler does not take over my life or my training.
Favorite running gear?
That’s a tough one! I am currently loving running in Mizunos and you will rarely see me without some sort of skirtsports skirt or capri on. My absolute favorite “gear” would be my running BRF’s.
Do you follow any sort of diet?
I have been a vegetarian since I was 12 and I strive to eat a well balanced, healthy vegetarian diet. I do not believe in counting calories or carbs or weighing myself. Took me years to get there but I am so much happier.
What advice would you give to a newbie?
Start where you are and start slowly. Find what you love about running and embrace it. Of course, I would say “join a running group” of like minded friends for support and company.
What’s your favorite race memory?
Some of my most favorite memories are from the Ragnar and American Odyssey relays I have done. I love the camaraderie of being on a team and working together to achieve a common goal. So many fun memories are made during those sleepless races.
Deborah has successfully raised a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. She is a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, she’s always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, Deborah started her own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 600 members. Through this she has met so many amazing women who inspire her daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find Deborah running with her crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked her into.
I love Deborah now more than ever!!!! We share a love for running skirts and our running BFFS!!! Thank you Deborah for sharing your running story with us!!! Each and every week I am so inspired by all of these amazing people!! Check out the other Running Inspiration posts here.
