Heading to NYC this year was anxiety provoking. I don’t love flying and leaving at 6:00 am left me without my usual drink pre-flight. Instead, I took half a xanax and tried to relax. I met a couple of amazing women on the flight and we had a lot of fun talking, that is until we got scolded by the flight attendent. When I say scolded, I mean scolded. It was after 7 am and maybe we were slightly loud, but we most definitely didn’t deserve to be treated like children. It is not about the message but about the delivery and the delivery was nasty. We finished out our flight without further altercations, mostly because I was so mellow from the xanax. I did complain to JetBlue via twitter……and they listened.
I spent the morning on Long Island with my in-laws and oldest daughter Angelica, who would be staying in the city with me. We had lunch at one of my favorite salad places, The International Delight Cafe. Afterward my father-in-law was nice enough to drive me to the Air BNB apartment I was staying at to drop off my stuff and then he drove us over to the New York City Marathon Expo.
The Expo is both amazing and overwhelming.
I won’t say I didn’t tear up a little bit picking up my race number, because I did. It was clearly getting real at this point.
I had two missions that I wanted to accomplish at the Expo. Mission One-to see my friend Katie at the BOB booth. It definitely wouldn’t be the same as last year, but I was super excited to get to see her anyway!
Mission two-to see my friend Ra at the KT Tape booth. I needed him to tape my foot as a precaution for Sunday.
Angelica and I “window shopped” for another hour or so before heading to the opening day parade for the New York City Marathon at Central Park. Walking seemed like a good idea until I realized how far it was, so we hopped on a subway. I was supposed to meet my friend Jen, but unfortunately my phone died right after this picture.
We stayed for a short while, but we really couldn’t see anything so we decided to head toward the apartment. We crossed through Central Park, which is absolutely stunning this time of year. While I do not miss the cold, the fall colors are just gorgeous. We found a Thai place on Yelp pretty close the the apartment ended up stopping there for dinner. Pad thai was the perfect way to start carb loading for the marathon.
After dinner we picked up a few supplies for the apartment and then headed back to crash. I was ready to sleep and rest my legs, so we just laid in bed watching movies.
Stay tuned for Day 2.
