This year I believe we have started a new Thanksgiving tradition……the Wiregrass Wobble Turkey Trot. This is a local 5K that takes place less than 5 minutes from my house and donates their profits to a few good causes including, the Florida Hospital Foundation, Feeding America Tampa Bay, FITniche Charities, and the Rotary Club of New Tampa charities. I love local races and I especially love local races that support local charities.
Most of my runner friends were signed up and running. Chris and I decided to warm up by running to the start, which ended up be 1.5 miles.
The race started promptly at 7:30 and I had two goals: (1) finish under 30 minutes and (2) beat my husband. This race hosted about 2000 people, both runners and walkers, and I really think the should start the runners about 10 minutes before the walkers to avoid all the weaving and dodging many of us runners had to do during the fist mile of the race. Courtesy would say walkers line up back further, but I haven’t found a smaller race that has actually enforced that rule.
This was an out and back race and by the halfway point it was a little less crowded. This race hosted about 1695 people and if they continue to do it yearly I definitely think that they need to make some adjustments to the course.
The last mile was a little tough because we had to run up a one floor parking garage at about the 2.3 mile mark. I know it’s not really a hill, but in Florida that is a hill and at 2.3 miles it sucked. The downhill was great and it was all smooth sailing from there!!! I managed to cross the finish line in 28:14. Boom!!! My two goals were met-finish in under 30 minutes and beat my husband (by 4 minutes)!!!!! They even got this great photo finish picture of me and it was free!!!!!!
I loved the medal because it was an ornamedal, perfect for the Christmas Tree!!!
It was an awesome way to start Thanksgiving!!!
Have you run a Turkey Trot?
